Éden, Éden, Éden à cinquante ans

Le 9 septembre 2020, pour célébrer le cinquantième anniversaire jour pour jour de la parution d’Éden, Éden, Éden, et marquer sa propre naissance, l’Association Pierre Guyotat a conçu et coordonné avec des partenaires de premier plan un programme de cinquante lectures en France et dans le monde.

Parue le 9 septembre 1970, Éden, Éden, Éden, œuvre de Pierre Guyotat, jeune auteur alors âgé de trente ans, a provoqué scandale, fascinations, admirations. «Fiction saharienne », elle est préfacée par Michel Leiris, Roland Barthes, Philippe Sollers, saluée par Michel Foucault; censurée mais soutenue par une pétition internationale, associant les voix de Joseph Beuys, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Pierre Boulez, Italo Calvino, Jean-Paul Sartre… Elle est mythique.  

Cinquante ans plus tard, l’œuvre de Pierre Guyotat, qui nous a quittés le 7 février de cette année, a un impact sans cesse grandissant, et apparaît comme une prescience d’un monde qui allait se transformer, de violence, de sexualité, de décolonisation, de cosmologie. C’était le point d’aboutissement de l’histoire coloniale aussi bien que le point de départ d’une nouvelle histoire, de la langue française, de la vision du présent, du passé et du futur.

Lors des derniers mois de la vie de Pierre Guyotat, la question de la célébration du cinquantième anniversaire de la parution de ce texte s’était posée. Suivant l’inspiration des cinquante ans de Tombeau pour cinq cent mille soldats, en 2017, qui donnèrent lieu à cinq heures de lecture en français, anglais, allemand, japonais, russe, il s’agira pour Éden, Éden, Éden, de célébrer les cinquante ans de l’œuvre en son jour anniversaire, le 9 septembre, en organisant cinquante lectures dans cinquante lieux de France et du monde. 

Chaque cas sera différent, chaque lieu choisi aura un sens précis dans l’œuvre, la vie, et le monde de Pierre Guyotat. Chaque lieu partenaire concevra sa lecture, selon ses propres moyens, avec son public, présent physiquement ou en ligne. Partenaires privés, publics, artistes, auteurs, admirateurs de toutes origines et de toutes œuvres s’associent pour manifester ensemble la vie de ce grand texte visionnaire. 

Les lectures auront lieu en français, dans les langues des traductions existantes (anglais, allemand, espagnol, néerlandais, japonais, russe…) ou feront l’objet de nouvelles traductions (arabe, hébreu, italien…). Elles pourront être individuelles ou collectives, et chacune sera unique, pensée par et pour chaque lieu. 

Eden, Eden, Eden at 50

Since its release with legendary publishing house Gallimard on September 9th, 1970, Eden, Eden, Eden, the work of Pierre Guyotat, a young author then in his thirties, has provoked scandals, fascinations, and marvels. Deemed a “Saharian fiction”, it was published with forewords by Michel Leiris, Roland Barthes, Philippe Sollers, and was instantly praised by Michel Foucault; upon being censored, it gained immediate international support by the likes of Joseph Beuys, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Pierre Boulez, Italo Calvino, Jean-Paul Sartre… It is a legendary work.

Fifty years later, the work of Pierre Guyotat – who passed away on February 7^th of this year – exerts an ever-growing impact, having proven to be prescient of a world on the verge of transformation, through violence, sexuality, decolonization, cosmology. It’s the endpoint of colonialism as well as the starting point of a new history, for language, offering a new vision of the present, the past, and the future. 

The question of celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the publication was considered during the last months of Pierre Guyotat’s life. Taking inspiration from the fifty years of Tombeau pour cinq cent mille soldats, in 2017, which gave rise to five hours of readings in French, English, German, Japanese and Russian, the Association Pierre Guyotat, established by the author for the conservation of his work will celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of Eden, Eden, Eden on September 9th, by organizing fifty readings in fifty different places in France, and around the world. 

Each reading will be different. Each venue will consider a precise meaning within the work, life and world of Pierre Guyotat, and it will create their own reading, according to their own means for its audience, attending physically or online. Private and public partners, artists, authors, and admirers will join together to manifest the life of this great visionary text. The readings will take place in French, in the languages of existing translations (English, German, Spanish, Dutch, Japanese, Russian…)  or provide an opportunity for new translations (Arabic, Hebrew, Italian…). They might be the result of an individual or a collective effort, and each one will be unique, conceived by, and for, each specific venue.
